Our favorite foodie duo, The Nutrition Twins®, spent the afternoon with us and we learned how these sisters like to get down in the kitchen.
“Healthy food can be totally delicious.”
Tammy Lakatos Shames and Lyssie Lakatos are a dynamite pair who have immense knowledge about how people can live their best lives through food. Not only are they nationally recognized registered dietitian nutritionists (RDN), they’re also personal trainers (CFT), and leading experts in healthy living.
“Healthy foods can be totally delicious. Sometimes when people think of ‘healthy,’ there’s a disconnect. Not a lot of people think of ‘healthy’ and ‘delicious’ as coming together, but they definitely do,” Lyssie said.
The Nutrition Twins® are brilliant at building that connection between eating something healthy and eating something tasty. They share thousands of recipes on Pinterest, and they’re known for creating quick and simple meals that satisfy your cravings and flatter your waistline.
“Fresh and unprocessed ingredients can be so delicious when they’re prepared the right way. And it doesn’t have to always be a process. You can do things that are quick and easy, without sacrificing flavor,” Tammy said.
Through their work in food, Tammy and Lyssie educate the public on how taste and health don’t have to be mutually exclusive.
“Part of eating a balanced meal is that we also had dessert every night.”
Much of The Nutrition Twins’® passion for healthy eating was instilled in them at an early age by their parents. Many of these learnings are now being passed on to a new generation of twins: Tammy’s twin daughters.
When we all spoke on Tuesday afternoon, Tammy was getting ready to make her daughters’ favorite meals: ground turkey tacos.
“It’s easy to make and it’s delicious,” Tammy said. “It’s a healthy combination of ground turkey breast, with someone peppers and spices. I love the combination of using sweet peppers with the savory turkey and spices. My daughters love it too.”
And if you’ve ever had any speculations about twin telepathy, The Nutrition Twins® will turn you into a believer. Not only do they finish each other’s sentences, they sometimes also accidentally dress the same, and they will often eat the same meals.
“That’s so funny because I’m going to make tacos tonight too!” Lyssie said. “I’m making a bean taco with a soft shell, with lots of veggies. It’s actually similar to one of our Chef’d recipes.”
“We love Taco Tuesday.”
“We also love a good Taco Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.”
Tammy and Lyssie anchor their healthy ideas like this: They eat well-balanced meals. Much of this practice was taught to them by their mother, and they pass these lessons on to everyone else.
“Part of eating balanced meals was that we also had dessert every night. Dessert could even be popcorn. It was anything that wasn’t totally nutritious. It could also be ice cream. But it was only after we had all of our nutrients. This allowed us to focus on the healthy foods first.”
The Nutrition Twins® love chocolate, but they don’t follow “cheat days.” A Cheat Day is when a person takes a guilt-free break from whatever diet they’re following. But in the case of The Nutrition Twins®, their relationship with food is about following a lifestyle, not a diet, and especially not a crash-diet, so cheat days aren’t necessary.
“This is what we learned from our mom: We eat healthy every day, but we also have a treat every day. So we never necessarily have cheat days,” Lyssie said. “For me, I’m a big sweets fan. So what I might have for dessert is like dark chocolate—or anything chocolate, let’s be honest.”
When you’re following a lifestyle that’s anchored in the concept of well-balanced meals, then there is no need for a cheat day. It becomes unnecessary because you’re already giving your body the fuel that it needs while also staying true to yourself, by allowing yourself a little bit of wiggle room within reason.
“We always had healthy, well-balanced meals. On our plate, we had to have some protein, have some vegetables, and some fiber. Each meal was balanced.”
Their memories of food influence everything from what they eat today, to even their meal kits with California Prunes.
“One of our meal kits with Chef’d and California Prunes is inspired by a meal that we would make in college. All of our best friends would come over because they smelled it in the hall. Everyone would come running over because it smelled so good.”
This was just the beginning of their healthy food legacy. As The Nutrition Twins® expanded their knowledge about food, their influence expanded too. You can see them regularly appear on television shows like “Good Morning America” and Food Network’s “Chopped!”
