How to Make the Perfect Açaí Bowl

Shake up your morning smoothie by transforming it into a beautiful and nutritious bowl! Açaí bowls are just about everywhere and it’s no secret why—they’re good. Like really good.

These superfood packed bowls are packed with good-for-you ingredients that make for the perfect breakfast and lunch or even a great snack.

They're basically the closest thing you can get to a big fat bowl of ice cream—without the guilt.

We know what you’re thinking, “What in the world is Açaí?”

Chances are, you’ve never seen an Açaí berry at the store and you’re probably struggling with how to even pronounce it (Ah-sah-ee). This fruit is actually a species of palm tree that is native to South America. The rich black-purple berries are small in size and have a large seed in the middle—think of them as the perfect combination of a grape and cherry.

So why can’t you find them in stores? Açaí berries go bad very quickly, and because they are mostly grown in the Amazon, getting them on shelves still fresh is somewhat impossible. That’s why you always find Açaí in the frozen section. Growers extract the delicious pulp from the berries so we can enjoy all of the delicious benefits of Açaí.

Why Eat Açaí?

While any type of berry will do just fine in a smoothie bowl, Açaí have become the most popular. These berries are not only full of rich, fruity flavors but also pack in many health benefits.

High Level of Antioxidants

Move over, cranberries—you’re not the most antioxidant-rich fruit anymore. Açaí berries have more antioxidants than any other fruit and vegetable out there. Antioxidants provide your body with the protection it needs against damaging chemicals that can lead to unwanted sickness and diseases.

In Açaí berries, you’ll find Anthocyanin. This is a powerful antioxidant that is typically found in the blue, red, and violet pigment in plants. Anthocyanin acts as an anti-inflammatory, which can reduce pain and inflammation in your body

Low in Sugar

Most fruits, especially berries, contain high amounts of natural sugars, but not Açaí. Strawberries and cranberries can contain upwards of five grams of sugar, while Açaí only contains around two grams. This is a great benefit for all of the smoothie lovers out there. Smoothies can contain loads of sugar, defeating the purpose of being a healthy breakfast alternative. Using Açaí puree can help reduce your sugar intake tremendously.

Contain Excellent Amounts of Iron, Calcium, Fiber, and Vitamin A

As if all of that wasn’t enough, Açaí berries also contain great amounts of iron, fiber, calcium, and vitamin A. All of these are great for the body for their own reasons. Iron helps you fight fatigue by transporting oxygen throughout your body. Calcium helps you grow strong bones and teeth, while also contributing to proper blood clotting. Fiber is used to lower your blood cholesterol and help prevent heart disease and diabetes. Vitamin A is crucial for eye health, immune function, and reproduction. All of these amazing things are crammed into one little berry—and it tastes good too! What more could you ask for?
