You’ve probably heard this before: Vitamins are important. Whether you’ve heard this from your doctor recently or from your parents when you were a child, it’s been ingrained in our health-conscious peripheral that vitamins are essential for a healthy life.
So, what are the vitamins and supplements that you should be taking? Each person will have different variants as to what they should be taking, but we want to take about five different supplements that are pretty out-of-the-box, you probably haven’t heard about them.
Why are vitamins and supplements important?
People take supplements in order to ensure that they’re receiving all of the essential nutrients they need for a healthy life. Before you begin to add supplements to your diet, it’s recommended that you consult a doctor or health professional.
According to the National Institutes of Health, “more than half of all Americans take one or more dietary supplements daily or on occasion… Common supplements include vitamins, minerals, and herbal products, also known as botanicals.”
It’s possible to acquire all of the essential nutrients you need for proper body functions just by eating the right foods. But, just in case you want to explore other options, these are the five current trendy supplements people are talking about today.
The B vitamins are:
- B1 (thiamine)
- B2 (riboflavin)
- B3 niacin)
- B5 (pantothenic acid)
- B7 (biotin)
- Folic Acid
According to the U.S. National Library of Medicine, B vitamins “help the process your body uses to make energy from the food you eat. They also help form red blood cells.”
Outside of supplements, you can naturally acquire B vitamins by eating leafy greens, beans, and meat products, including fish.
Turmeric is the main ingredient in many Indian dishes. It comes from the Curcuma longa plant, which can be found growing in Southeast Asian countries and in India.
The active part of turmeric is curcumin, and according to Mayo Clinic, this makes turmeric a “functional food” because it has “a potentially positive effect on health beyond basic nutrition.”
There are over ten thousand peer-reviewed journals that prove turmeric’s positive effects on health. According to these studies, turmeric may slow or prevent blood clots, reduce depression symptoms, fight inflammation, boost skin health—and more.
Ashwagandha is a plant that can be found in Eastern Asia and Northern Africa. Its root is used to make supplements that you can find at vitamin stores.
According to WebMD, ashwagandha is used for the following reasons:
- Menstrual Problems
“Some people use ashwagandha for improving thinking ability, decreasing pain and swelling (inflammation), and preventing the effect of aging. It is also used for fertility problems in men and women and also to increase sexual desire.”
The studies performed on ashwagandha tested 600mg. Consider this, if you’re considering taking the supplement.
Collagen is naturally in the body. It’s like the glue that supports the structure of our body tissue. There have been claims made that taking collagen supplements can support healthy skin, hair, and nails.
Look at the ingredients in your favorite lotion and you might notice collagen is a key ingredient. Other than lotions, you can take collagen in a pill form, or purchase it as a powder to add to your smoothies or protein shakes.
Are you hip to the kombucha craze? Part of the appeal is focused primarily on the probiotics that are in kombucha. According to sources, “a healthy balance of gut bacteria reduces inflammation and helps to protect against infections, allergies, digestive problems, skin conditions, food cravings, weight gain, and autoimmune diseases.” Some bacteria are bad. Some bacteria are good. Probiotics are the good bacteria.
How to get the most vitamins from your food
If you want to get the most vitamins from your food, it’s best practice to eat the food, specifically vegetables, raw. As you cook the veggies, it often cooks away the nutrients. This is why salads are so beneficial!
Cutting up fruits and vegetables will also free up the nutrients to make it easier for you to consume them. When you cut into fruits and vegetables it breaks down the plant cell walls—this is a good thing.
